About US Virgin Islands

When you think of the Caribbean, there’s a good chance the U.S. Virgin Islands of St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas come to mind. These exquisite islands are stand-outs in a region that is noted for its natural beauty. Best of all, the Virgin Islands is  a territory of the U.S.A. and U.S. citizens don’t need a passport to visit.

The laid-back, family friendly islands lie at around 18° N / 64.5° W, almost 1,000 miles east of the U.S. Mainland. Surprisingly, there are only a scant 400 air miles difference on the routes between New York and Miami!

The Virgin Islands is part of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles and the easterly Trade Winds caress the islands shores during most of the year.

The Virgin Islands is famous for shopping. Discover the world’s most luxurious products from gems and fine china to beauty preparations and liquor. Because of the islands unique status under the American flag, it is much more than a duty-free port — There is a customs allowance that’s twice that of other island destinations and there’s no sales tax.

Accommodation choices range from world-class resort hotels to charming inns, rental villas and vacation apartments. There are great things to do above and below the sea, notable eateries, rich history to explore and a small, but very active night-life scene.

Each island is amazingly different and has its own unique charm. The Virgin Islands is definitely the place to enjoy your next island vacation

The population

The population of the Virgin Islands is about 110,000, with just over 4,000 folks living on St. John—the balance is evenly divided between St. Thomas and St. Croix.
