About Cayman Islands

The three islands that make up the Cayman archipelago are coral outcrops, part of an underwater mountain range running between Cuba and Belize. Grand Cayman is the most developed of the three islands; Cayman Brac boasts a massive central limestone outcrop; and Little Cayman is the smallest of the trio. About 460 miles south of Miami, the three islands lie northwest of Jamaica and south of Cuba.

Grand Cayman is about 22 miles from west to east, a mile wide at its narrowest and eight miles wide at its fullest. The highest point, in the centre of the island, is about 60 feet above sea level. Cayman Brac’s Bluff, on the other hand, rises to an elevation of 140 feet. The Brac is 11 miles long and about a mile and a half wide. Little Cayman lives up to its name at 10 miles long and a mile wide. Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are affectionately referred to as ‘Sister Islands’. People frequently – but incorrectly – refer to the Cayman Islands as ‘the Caymans’. Much better to say, simply, Cayman.

The Population

People from all over the world make up Cayman’s population of about 50,000. Despite the national festival, Pirates Week, harking back to the age of piracy, this era pre-dated the settlement of Cayman in the 1700s and it’s highly unlikely that Blackbeard’s blood runs through Caymanians’ veins! Most Caymanians have their origins in Britain, Scotland or Africa. Other residents come from more than 80 different countries including the UK, US, Canada, Central America and Jamaica.
