How to help people affected by Hurricane Dorian

By Hannah Barnard on 4th September, 2019

Hurricane Dorian has torn through the Caribbean and decimated several islands in The Bahamas, with Abaco, Bimini and Grand Bahamas most badly affected.

How to help people affected by Hurricane Dorian

Dorian rapidly intensified into a Category 5 hurricane over the weekend before making landfall in The Bahamas on Sunday. The National Hurricane Center says that wind gusts reached up to 220 mph and that “life-threatening” storm surge ranged from 18 to 23 feet in some areas. Hurricane Dorian was the strongest storm ever to hit the Bahamas; it has killed at least seven people, destroyed houses and left countless homeless.

Several charitable organizations are seeking relief support, here are three ways you can help:

Support Miami’s donation drive

The city of Miami has launched BahamaStrong, an initiative to collect goods needed for the Bahamas recovery. There are donation drop off locations all over the city. Find out how you can help here.

Donate to the HeadKnowles Emergency Funds

HeadKnowles have set up a Go Fund Me page to raise relief funds to help people immediately in the worst affected areas: Abaco, Grand Bahama & Bimini. Visit the Go Fund Me page here.

Give to The Bahamas Red Cross Society

The Bahamas Red Cross Society is requesting help with its Dorian-relief program. Specifically, it’s looking for donations of nonperishable goods, water, toiletries, baby products, radios, batteries, candles, bedding, generators, and building supplies. Find out how you can help here.
